Udhayanidhi Stalin, the son of DMK supremo MK Stalin, has been touring various districts of Tamil Nadu to establish better public relations. Though the DMK scion does not hold any formal positions in the party, a large number of people believe that sooner or later he will succeed his father in political field.
During a grand sabha meeting recently, a 11-year-old girl told Udhayanidhi “During the last time when DMK ruled, you gave us free TV. But we are not able to watch TV as set-top box prices are expensive”. The DMK youth leader responded to it saying, “Yes my grandpa gave free TV. Please vote and bring back my father to power. We will distribute free set-top boxes.”
The distribution of free television sets had played a major in the DMK-Congress alliance victory in 2006 Tamil Nadu assembly elections.
Jayalalithaa had back then alleged that TV set distribution greatly benefitted Karunanidhi’s grand-nephews who control a large system of cable TV business.
A few participants also pointed out to Udhayanidhi that DMK leaders did not participate in ‘Devendrar Jayanti’ that is held to commemorate Immanuel Sekaran, a leader the Devendra community who worked to improve education, rights and representation of the Devendrakula vellalar caste.
