Zakir Naik’s terror money invested in Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, says BJP

The BJP on Monday lashed out at the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation (RGF), accusing it of receiving funding from controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik.

Addressing a press conference, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra alleged that Naik’s Islamic Research Foundation which is under investigation donated an amount of 50 lakh rupees to the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation in 2011.

“On 8 July 2011, the foundation gave Rs 50 lakh to the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation. The donation was done from a DCB bank account. This account is seized under PMLA,” Patra alleged.

Patra also alleged that fugitive diamond merchant Mehul Choksi and Yes bank founder Rana Kapoor also donated to the foundation. Both the men are accused in different bank fraud cases.

“Mehul Choksi is involved in the Punjab National Bank fraud case. Rajiv Gandhi Foundation has received many lakhs of rupees from the Foundation of Mehul Choksi,” alleged the BJP spokesperson.

Elaborating on the donation made by yes Yes Bank founder Rana Kapoor, Patra said that the Yes Bank “scam” which is based on “diversion” becomes even more significant given that Rs 9 cr 45 lakhs was “diverted” from Yes Bank to RGF. “It wasn’t Rana Kapoor’s money but Yes Bank’s which was yours and mine which was diverted to the Foundation of Ma and Beta,” alleged Patra.

Earlier, RGF came under scanner for receiving funding from China. The foundation is headed by Congress matriarch Sonia Gandhi, the wife of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
